Learn Spanish in Sucre
Sucre, the historical center of Bolivia, has
actually had four separate names throughout history. First
known as La Plata in 1538, then Charcas in the early 1660s,
followed by Ciudad Blanco and finally Sucre, in 1825. The final
name is in honor of Mariscal Antonio Jose de Sucre, a fighter
for Bolivian independence. With a city so rich in history, it
is a unique opportunity to learn Spanish in Sucre. The city
itself is rich with restaurants, cultural activities, markets
and museums to allow the visitor to gain a deep understanding
of the culture, language and people.
When you come to learn Spanish in Sucre, you
can also steep yourself in the religion that has been prominent
in the history of the city - there are magnificent churches and
cathedrals to explore. The main catherdral, simply called The
Cathedral, is a work of architectural beauty. Several smaller
churches, including Santo Domingo, San Miguel and San
Francisco, are well worth touring. The Universidad Mayor de San
Francisco Xavier, founded in 1624, is also open to the public
for tours. For fine art displays a trip to the Museo de la
Recoleta provides an opportunity to learn about local artists
since the 16th century. For more modern artwork the Museo Del
Arte Moderno and the Museo de Charcas provide wonderful
examples of local and national artists and their work. The
original document of independence was signed in the Casa de la
Libertad, which is now open to the public and holds many
military and historical documents.
There is more to do than just cultural events
in Sucre. To learn Spanish in Sucre, or at least to practice
it, it's important to try some of the festivals and
sporting events. The Pujllay fesitival in the small town of
Tarabuco is a must see when in Sucre. The wonderful costumes,
festive dances and showcases of traditional arts and crafts
make this a popular event. There are also Salsa dancing lessons
offered at all times of the year in the area, as well as art
classes for traditional Bolivian artwork.
For those that enjoy being outdoors, Sucre
offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and just
enjoying the wildlife and views in the hills of Sika Sika and
Churuquella, just outside the city of Sucre. Soccer is also a
popular sport in this Bolivian city and spending some time at
the stadium is a great way to make friends and learn Spanish in
Sucre.
