When you’re deciding which of the Spanish schools in
Nicaragua is the most suitable for you, bear in mind that the
largest cities are Managua, the capital, Leon, Chinandega and
Masaya; Granada is another wonderful colonial city.
You’ll obviously not be spending all your time in your
Spanish school in Nicaragua, and you’ll probably want to travel
around the country and see its attractions and handicrafts. One
of the best known places for arts and crafts is San Juan de
Oriente, one of the so-called "White Towns", which is famous
for its clay pots with pre-Columbian patterns.
Granada is well known for its fine embroidery and gold and
silver jewelry. But, even if your Spanish school isn’t in one
of these towns, you’ll always find an arts and crafts market
nearby, wherever you are in Nicaragua. Perhaps the most
well-known handicrafts, and the ones most bought by visitors,
are: hand-woven hammocks, wood carvings, hats, rugs and
embroidered blouses.
Nicaragua is well known for its excellent coffee – perhaps
your Spanish school will serve some during the breaks! Most of
the coffee is cultivated in the north of the country, in
Matagalpa and Jinoyega, where you can visit the plantations and
learn about the natural process of coffee making. Another
common crop in Nicaragua is tobacco, which is cultivated in
Estelí. Again, while you’re following your Spanish course in
Nicaragua, you’ll be able to visit some of the plantations and
factories to see the cigar-making process - and buy some cigars
at a reasonable price.
Wherever your Spanish school is situated in Nicaragua,
you’ll find that the cultural wealth of the country is
undoubtedly one of its greatest attractions, as well as the
hospitality and friendliness of its people, the "Nicas". You
can experience the greatness of its culture, and enjoy the
small towns full of beauty and rich in tradition. You'll find
beautiful architecture, plenty of history and festivals,
striking handicrafts, wonderful food and drinks and, above all,
the happy smiles of the people you meet along the way!
