The city itself has a population of around 350,000 inhabitants, although the Greater Metropolitan Area has almost 2.5 million inhabitants. As a city to learn Spanish, San Jose has many other advantages. The city has a very lively night life, with lots of clubs and bars, several theaters and a range of discos and dance salons, as well as a wide range of excellent international restaurants - always welcome anywhere you want to go to learn Spanish!

In San Jose you'll smell coffee all over - the city basically owes its present prosperity to the coffee business. Indeed, if you're looking for something typically local to take home with you as a present, you could do much worse than a few packets of coffee. Although Costa Rican coffee is exported all over the world, it just seems to taste better here! You'll find lots of coffee plantations all around the city, and you'll find a visit to one of them an interesting experience.

If you're more interested in the arts, you'll find that San Jose has some of the best and most modern museums in Central America. Especially interesting are the Jade Museum and the Centro Nacional de Arte y Cultura. And each year, in November, the city celebrates its Arts Festival, with theater, dance and folklore performances, as well as lots of concerts and exhibitions.

It is also important to know that if you ever get tired of learning Spanish in San Jose you can get away from the city very easily. More important, since San Jose is more or less in the center of the country, you can get almost everywhere in Costa Rica relatively quickly. You'll be able to visit volcanoes, go white-water rafting, explore a cloud forest, walk round a butterfly garden, and lots more.
