The old city itself is surrounded by ancient
walls that were historically a form of protection for the
elaborate 11th century Romanesque cathedral. The Diocesan
Museum, which is also known as the Museum of Medieval Arts,
houses many ancient and very well-preserved Greek and Roman
frescos and is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. The
Ciudadela or citadel is also a fascinating place to visit and
is one of the National Monuments of the area. The military
construction of the building was on a pentagon floor plan and
guides are available to explain various aspects of the massive
building. Throughout the area it is easy to see historical
stone houses and churches that were built hundreds of years ago
and are still used today. This makes an interesting contrast to
the thoroughly modern aspects of the newer parts of the city
itself.
Students, besides just completing Spanish courses in Jaca, can
also spend time exploring the lush valleys that surround the
city. Hiking, biking and fishing are all popular activities in
the summer, and in the winter the surrounding Pyrenees
Mountains make ideal snow boarding and skiing locations. The
Santiago Route, so named for the historic pilgrimage, makes an
ideal walking trip for either novice or experienced trekkers.
In addition there are several smaller towns and historical
locations in the surrounding area that make easy day trips from
the city of Jaca. Some of the most popular places to visit in
the surrounding area are Asieco, Abay, Guasillo and Canias.
The Spanish courses in Jaca will also talk about the wonderful
and simple food of the area. Most traditional dishes include
meat, fresh produce and wonderful baked items. In addition
there are several vineyards in the area that produce several
varieties of wines. Wine tasting tours are very popular for
visitors to the area.
