Spanish Courses in Granada (Nicaragua)
The Spanish schools in Granada just couldn't be
better situated! The city of Granada is only 40 km south of
Managua, 28 km from the international airport, 90 km from the
border with Costa Rica and 50 km from the most beautiful
beaches on the Pacific Ocean. So it is not only the ideal city
to use as a base to visit the main tourist attractions of
Nicaragua, but it is also considered one of the most beautiful
colonial cities in Central America in its own right.
When you enroll in one of the Spanish schools in Granada, be
prepared to see a lot of history. Granada, with a present
population of around 110,000 inhabitants, was founded in 1524
by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, and many historians believe
it to be the first city that was founded on the mainland of the
American continent. It is full of beautiful, well-preserved
neo-classical and baroque colonial architecture that can be
seen in a very traditional way - in a horse-drawn carriage.
Nature and Culture
The city is also known as "la Gran Sultana" - some people
say that's because of its Moorish and Andalusian appearance,
while others believe it's because of the nearby Mombacho
volcano, also known as "el Sultán". It is believed that the
volcano last erupted a million and a half years ago, and it is
now a national park, with stunning views and teeming with
fascinating flora and fauna. In fact, the city is not only
under the shadow of a volcano, but also on the banks of a lake,
Lake Cocibolca.
Also within easy reach of the city - and of the Spanish
schools in Granada - are the Isletas de Granada, 365 small
islands of volcanic origin that dot the surface of the lake.
They were formed by the eruption of the Mombacho volcano one
and a half million years ago. 88% of them have an area of less
than one hectare (2.47 acres), and all together they cover just
2.21 square kilometers.
This means that students at the different Spanish schools in
Granada are never at a loss for things to do. For the nature
lovers, Granada offers a doorway to lakes, forests and
mountains full of flora and fauna - and many vocabulary
lessons. They can go trekking in the mountains, follow an
exciting canopy train in the cloud forest or take a trip on the
lake in a kayak.
And for the tourist at heart, Granada offers not only
colonial architecture, history and culture, but also excellent
shopping, eating and museums. At the Spanish schools in
Granada, the students not only learn to speak in Spanish, they
also come away with much to talk about!
